Hartman Environmental has worked on vapor intrusion sites for periods as short as 1 day to periods lasting several years. Some of the more complex sites are listed below. There are many other smaller sites such as service station sites, dry-cleaner sites, and individual residences that also have been assessed but are not listed here.

Continuous Monitoring – Thermal Heating Remediation site – Oakland, CA

Date Conducted: Feb 2017 – ongoing
Client: OTIE
Oversite Agency: EPA Region 9
Project Description: Continuous monitoring of indoor and ambient air for vinyl chloride, TCE and PCE at 14 locations across and bordering a site undergoing thermal heating remediation. This is the first time that vinyl chloride in air has been measured in real time. Data were collected prior to heating and during heating to ensure the vapor recovery system was performing adequately and make adjustments based upon the real-time data. As of September 2017, approximately 25,000 measurements of vinyl chloride, TCE and PCE have been collected. Data are available in real time to the client and EPA and also automatically uploaded to EPA’s Viper database software.

Continuous Monitoring – Industrial Facility, Baltimore, MD

Date Conducted: Feb 2017 – April 2017
Client: Tetratech/CDM Smith
Oversite Agency: none
Project Description: Continuous monitoring of room air and sump air in a basement for TCE and PCE at 15 locations with goal to understand the cause and effect of TCE concentrations in a large basement under an industrial building. The real-time data enabled immediate recognition of indoor TCE concentration variations when sumps were covered and uncovered. Approximately 8,000 measurements of TCE and PCE were collected over a 2-month period. Data were available for viewing by the client and property owner in real time on the web.

Continuous Monitoring – Single Family Residence – Los Angeles CA

Date Conducted: October 2016
Client: Ramboll
Oversite Agency: CA-DTSC
Project Description: Continuous monitoring of indoor and ambient air for TCE at 8 locations inside and outside a single family residence with goal to determine the source of TCE previously detected. Data were collected for 30 days. The real-time data enabled immediate recognition of indoor TCE concentration variations when air filtration units were on and off and when a sub-slab mitigation was on and off.

Continuous Monitoring – Thermal heating remediation site – New Hampshire

Date Conducted: June 2016 to January 2017
Client: Hull & Associates
Oversite Agency: EPA Region 1, NH-DEH
Project Description: Continuous monitoring of indoor and ambient air for TCE and PCE at 15 locations inside an active manufacturing facility at a site undergoing thermal heating remediation. Data were collected prior to heating and during heating to ensure the vapor recovery system was performing adequately. The system ran uninterrupted for over 7 months and approximately 30,000 measurements of TCE and PCE were collected. Data were available for viewing by the property owner, consultant, and EPA in real time on the web. The system enabled unexpected detections of TCE to be instantly recognized and tracked down to indoor air sources.
